The slides about UAV-based quantitative remote sensing principles and applications in forestry we made were rated as high-quality courseware in Beijing universities.

As a periodic activity, we take group photos on Ginko Street on the BFU campus when the Ginko leaves turn yellow.

October

I attended the first forum on UAV remote sensing of agriculture held at Chang’an University (my mother’s university during the bachelor stage) in Xi’an. I presented the key issues, corresponding thinking, and practices in the low-altitude UAV quantitative remote sensing field. I also met my classmates who worked in Xi’an and neighboring cities.

Congratulations to Mr. Yangmingrui Gao (PhD student from NAU). With the supervision of Prof. Shouyang Liu, we proposed a cross-resolution vegetation segmentation model trained by real and simulated-to-realistic images.

I was invited to present a popular science report about UAV remote sensing applications in agriculture and forestry (Title “偶开天眼觑红尘:苍茫大地,无人机知否?”), for high school students in The High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China (人大附中). I was surprised that some of the students have so wide knowledge about natural science. Hope to give them some inspiration.

We invited Fred Baret, Marie Weiss, Alexis Comar, Marie-Pia d’ Argaignon from INRAe (Avignon) to visit BFU and make presentations about remote sensing and agriculture in both academic and industry sides. I am very honored to gather all my three supervisors in the Master and Doctor stages (Fred Baret, Guangjian Yan, Xihan Mu) in Beijing. We talked a lot about my work, career and many other kinds of stuff. A great day worth memorizing.

I attended the 1st workshop on remote sensing modeling in Chengde. A presentation about reflectance correction of UAV multispectral image under cloudy conditions was given by me.

July

I attended the 9th Chinese Forestry Conference held by Northwest A&F University in Yangling, Shaanxi. I made a presentation about aerial remote sensing -based forest overstory and understory vegetation cover estimation.

We conducted a field experiment in Saihanba National Forest Park located in Chengde. This experiment aimed to collect UAV multiangular images and orthomosaics at different solar geometries for developing BRDF correction algorithms, and to obtain UAV multispectral images during clear day and cloudy day for developing radiometric correction algorithms.

We developed a smart device used to measure leaf inclination angle, named LAMDA (Leaf Angle Measurement Device alpha version (叶倾角测量仪)). With the App (“LeAngle”), it can measure and record the inclination angles of leaves and needles even branches. It has been used to support a wide range of studies from more than 10 universities.

We developed a UAV flight planner software (named μMAPLE) for multiple types of multiangular observations. It can export KML-format and WPML-format flight lines supporting the Phantom, Mavic, and Matrice -series.

June

I was invited to make a presentation (in Chinese) about post-fire burn severity assessment and recovery prediction based on multi-source remote sensing and forest growth model in the First Academic Forum on Multi-source Remote Sensing Technology and Applications held at Beijing Normal University.

I assisted Prof. Huang in supervising doctoral and master’s students to successful graduation. They are Lin Simei (Ph.D.), Liu Shangbo (Master’s), and Li Xiao (Master’s). Additionally, several other doctoral and master’s students also graduated. We took some joyful photos with all the graduates. Wishing them smooth sailing in their future endeavors!

We organized a team-building event at a countryside farmhouse in Langfang (廊坊). Activities included playing mahjong, singing, playing pool, small games, barbecuing, spicy crayfish, drinking, and chatting.

I attended the 2024 Plant Phenotyping forum for young scholars held in Nanjing (南京). I was invited to make a presentation with the title “How can near-surface remote Sensing help forest phenotypic breeding” (近地面遥感如何助力林木表型育种的思考)

Together with Hao Yang (杨浩) and Jiale Jiang (江佳乐), we proposed a session about UAV quantitative remote sensing of vegetation at the 9th Earth Science Conference for Young Scholars in Xiamen (厦门). More than 15 scholars from different universities made their presentations about the recent advances in UAV remote sensing. I also made a presentation about a strategy of “virtuality-reality integrity” in UAV and satellite remote sensing classification and retrieval tasks (近地面/卫星遥感分类与反演任务中的“虚实相合”策略)

Once again. Congratulations to Miss. Simei Lin (a Ph.D. student). Our study about predicting post-fire forest recovery using the 3-PG model with bi-temporal Landsat imagery has been accepted by a top journal in forestry, i.e., Forest Ecology and Management.

April

Spring sports games were held on April 19 in BFU. I attended to three items, i.e., using fire extinguisher, using fire hose, and passing small balls from one to the other. I won the second prize for the item of fire extinguisher.

Congratulations to Miss. Simei Lin (a Ph.D. student). Our study about stratified burn severity assessment has been published in the top journal of the remote sensing field, i.e., Remote Sensing of Environment. We took two years to establish, revise, and improve this study.

Together with colleagues from the Chinese Academy of Forestry, we conducted a field survey for yellow leaf disease of areca palm (commonly known as betel palm (Areca catechu L.)) (槟榔黄化病)plantations in Wenchang, Hainan province, on March 19-22. The disease has been a major limiting factor threatening areca palm, called “cancer of areca palm”.

Miss Shuo Yang (杨烁) was selected as an intern (6/20) in an international organization called the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP). She will work in a branch of this organization located in Beijing for six months.

On 6th March, we launched the first team meeting in 2024. Master and PhD students designed their objectives and plans in this meeting. Two students shared two articles related to their research. I gave red packets to each student as small gifts in the new academic year.

February

I devoted about two months to writing research proposals for applying for funds from the NSFC and other organizations. The subjects include biodiversity monitoring (international participant), forest disturbance monitoring (participant), and airborne-based retrieval of forest understory essential variables (director).

January

I obtained the “Excellent Member of Haidian Branch of Jiusan Society ” due to my contributions in 2023, e.g., newspaper editing, policy proposal drafting, volunteer to memorize Xi Liang (梁希).
